The United States celebrates Memorial Day on the last Monday in May to remember those who have given their lives in defense of their country. It’s a national holiday that kicks off the summer season and many celebrate the day in the most traditional of American pastimes—taking a day off from work, drinking cold beer, and slapping some meat on the grill. Celebrating all that makes America great doesn’t have to be a somber affair. A blow out red, white, and blue pool party is quintessentially American and thus, strangely appropriate. So even as we poke a little fun at the kinds of things we’re doing on Memorial Day, we should never forget that it’s not “National Barbecue Day,” it’s a day of commemoration.
