Philadelphia celebrated its first official Independence Day with ringing bells and band music on July 8, 1776 in honor of the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. One year later, on July, 4 1777, they added fireworks to the party. Ever since, Americans have burned hands, singed eyebrows, destroyed lawns, severed fingers, and scared the bejesus out of our pets in the time honored tradition of having bigger and more spectacular firework displays every year.
